What began as a simple idea - diving into the Sky Sports and Sports News archives to see what stories were waiting to be uncovered - quickly grew into a full‑scale, feature‑length documentary that needed real craft, proper teamwork and a shared love of storytelling. But bringing Big Sam’s Bolton back to life wasn’t just a production challenge. It was also a chance to take a fresh look at one of English football’s most misunderstood managers and to celebrate a story that still means a great deal to fans and players today.

Person sits alone in a dark cinema auditorium, speaking during an interview, with empty seats and soft lights behind.

The project became a brilliant example of what Sky’s Editorial and Post teams do best: mixing modern interviews with a rich archive and shaping them into a narrative that honours both the central figure and the people who lived through that era. From the first cut to the final polish ahead of the red‑carpet premiere in Bolton, every stage was driven by a collective determination to do justice to Sam Allardyce’s remarkable tenure, a period often misrepresented but here shown for what it truly was: the story of a forward‑thinking manager, leading and inspiring a team that consistently defied expectation and punched above its weight.

What follows are the accounts of the key creatives behind the documentary, describing the processes, challenges, inspirations and emotions that came with seeing the finished film land so powerfully - not just with audiences and contributors, but also with Big Sam himself.

Hear from the team

“Big Sam’s Bolton did not feel out of place being shown in the cinema. That says everything about the quality of it. The journalism and storytelling behind it was so very impressive and revelatory - who actually remembered the toilet racing footage?! Good storytelling is made great by expert editing and production. So, thank you to everyone who elevated this project to exceptional standards. Big Sam cried (twice) when he watched it and I loved it and felt incredibly proud to be associated with something of such consummate quality. Thank you, all; very well done”
